Abstract
Over the years man has develop rapidly in the aspect of technology which as lead to an increase in his demand for power and energy as his new inventions requires him to do so. This demand for energy has made him derive various means of providing energy from various energy sources. The use of coal in steam engines, and fire wood for cooking, were one of such method, most recently used are petrol, diesel and other fossil fuel, which has high negative effect to his environment. This research contains an assessment of solar energy potential in Akure, the basics of this work is to determine the possibility of solar energy installation in Akure as an alternate source of electric energy in the selected site (Akure). It focus is on the meteorological parameters that influences the production of electricity from solar radiation which includes the clearness index, (which gives information of both cloud cover, aerosols and anything in the atmosphere that can absorb or redirect solar radiation). This is done by a simple linear relation given by Angstrom (1924) and modified by (Prescott, 1924). The results show that Akure would be a good site for solar energy installation with an average of in the dry season and an average of in the wet season.
